CURE Kenya Begins Construction on a Solar Energy Field

We are delighted to announce that AIC CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya (CURE Kenya) has begun construction of a new solar field, marking a significant step toward sustainable energy solutions. In partnership with USAID’s Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (USAID/ASHA), this project is part of CURE International’s broader goal to ensure high-quality patient services through reliable, stable, and cost-effective energy. The partnership is expected to reduce the hospital’s reliance on expensive and unreliable electricity, allowing CURE Kenya to reinvest the savings into life-changing healthcare for vulnerable children.

CURE Kenya utilizes electricity to run almost all operations related to patient care, from registration and consultation on the electronic medical record system to the X-ray system used to take images that guide diagnosis and treatment to the wards and running anaesthesia machines in the OR. The sole source of electricity is the single national-owned electricity generating company in Kenya, which serves the whole country. Due to this monopoly, the cost of electricity has been rising over the years.

The new solar field is estimated to reduce the hospital’s electricity bill by approximately 50%, freeing up more resources to treat children and expanding access to care in underserved areas.

This project is part of a larger partnership between CURE International and USAID/ASHA to empower several CURE hospitals to operate off of clean, renewable, and reliable solar power. These solar power installations are expected to significantly reduce operational costs, allowing CURE hospitals to better focus on their mission of treating children with disabilities in areas with limited access to specialized care.

The installation of the solar power field at CURE Kenya is just the beginning of a brighter and more sustainable future for the hospital and the many children it serves.
