Bovin is a young man from a small village on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya. He was born just like any other kid and with legs just like any other kid’s, but when he turned three, his family began to notice an irregularity in his knees. Bovin slowly started to develop knock knees, where his knees bent inwards and hit (or “knocked” into) each other when he walked.
But even before all of this, Bovin’s life has been marked by hardship from the very beginning. Losing his dad and his mom abandoning him at a young age, he found himself in the care of his elder brother, Maxwell. Bovin’s knock knees severely affected his quality of life. Simple tasks like walking to school or playing soccer became painful and frustrating, if not impossible. Even though his brother tried every way to help alleviate the pain of his knees, Bovin has felt alone for most of his life.
One day, a glimmer of hope entered their lives when Maxwell was at their local market and met a medical student who was passionate about helping others. This medical student learned of Bovin’s condition and told Maxwell about the work done at CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya (CURE Kenya). She correctly claimed CURE Kenya could help straighten Bovin’s legs!
Maxwell passed the news on, and Bovin wasted no time approaching the medical student himself. She listened intently as Bovin shared his dreams of a life without the limitations of his knock knees. Bovin’s story moved her, and she agreed to help coordinate the necessary resources for Bovin’s assessment at the CURE Kenya mobile clinic near their home. Bovin was seen and promptly booked for surgery at CURE Kenya. “I would like to play football when my knees are corrected,” Bovin beamed with hope.

Bovin and Maxwell made their way to CURE Kenya, and Bovin’s treatment began. This was a whole new world for Bovin. “My favorite things at CURE were how I was being handled by doctors and nurses, the spiritual leadership, the calm and cool environment, the food at CURE, and the love that is being shown and shared at CURE!” Bovin expressed.

Bovin’s life was not only impacted physically but spiritually as well. “Of course, my healing is the Lord’s doing through CURE because that’s where I gave my life to God through the advice from the beloved pastors at CURE and the praying that was being held at CURE each and every day,” Bovin told us.

Bovin is now healed and has fully recovered. He can walk, play football, and exist pain-free. There are endless possibilities ahead of this young man, thanks to his transformation. However, during his time at CURE, Bovin was really touched by the care he received, and he developed a desire to pursue a career in nursing. “My hope and dream is to bring light to our home and bring it out of poverty through joining [a college] and completing a nursing course. Then maybe I can get employed at CURE hospital as a nurse,” Bovin shared. While Bovin has a lot of hard work ahead of him to make this dream a reality, he has secured sponsorship to a nursing course and has applied, and he is now awaiting space in the program.
We are grateful to God for healing Bovin and giving him a renewed purpose in life. We pray that his journey will be easier moving forward and that he will achieve all his heart’s desires. “I would like to thank all the staff of CURE and all friends and partners who support the work of CURE, and I would also encourage my fellow friends who have problems like mine,” Bovin said with much gratitude.
Bovin had to wait so long to finally receive life-changing surgery. There are many more children like him waiting, and there are several things YOU can do to help end their wait:
- We have mobile clinics across Kenya where you can send any kids with such conditions to get the help they need.
- Be part of a child’s healing journey through giving in kind. Click here to see how you can give.
