A Special Gift Arrives

Eunice and Francis were overjoyed when they welcomed fraternal twin boys into their family. The twins were born healthy, and their parents looked forward to watching them grow together. But as the months passed, they noticed that one of their sons, Michael, was developing differently.

The First Signs Something Was Wrong

When the twins turned six months old, Michael’s brother began sitting up on his own. Michael, however, could not. His parents became concerned and started paying closer attention. They soon realized there was a problem around Michael’s knees. Unlike other children his age, he could not bend or move them normally.

Determined to find answers, Francis and Eunice took Michael to a hospital. They hoped doctors would explain what was causing the problem and tell them how to help their son. Unfortunately, no clear diagnosis was given, and the family returned home discouraged and uncertain about the future.

Small Steps Forward

When Michael was two years old, his parents received advice to begin physiotherapy. Alongside therapy, he also underwent a period of casting. For an entire year, the family remained committed to the treatment plan. Their perseverance paid off. Michael gradually gained strength and eventually began walking. It was a milestone that filled his parents with joy and renewed hope.

When Progress Was Not Enough

After seeing Michael walk, the physiotherapist advised the family to stop treatment and be satisfied with the progress he had made. Grateful for the improvement, they followed the recommendation. But as Michael turned fifteen years old, his condition began to worsen. His legs began to bend farther backward, making movement increasingly difficult. Francis refused to give up. He visited hospitals and sought advice from numerous medical professionals, hoping someone would offer a solution.

Instead, he was repeatedly told that surgery was not possible.

Finding Hope Online

Frustrated but determined, Francis turned to the internet. While searching for answers, he came across a photograph of a child whose condition appeared even more severe than Michael’s. What caught his attention was that the child had received treatment at CURE Kenya.

For the first time in years, Francis felt a spark of hope. He immediately began searching for information about the hospital and how he could contact them.

A Door Opens Through a Mobile Clinic

After reaching out to CURE Kenya, Francis learned about a mobile clinic being held near his home. Since the family lives nearly 10 hours from the hospital, the opportunity to attend a clinic just 2 hours away felt like an answer to prayer.

Michael and his parents traveled to the clinic, where they were assessed by the medical team. There, they finally received encouraging news. Michael was a candidate for surgery and was scheduled for treatment at CURE Kenya!

Mobile clinics help CURE medical and spiritual teams bring much-needed medical care to some of the most remote and distant places where CURE serves to help children with inadequate access to healthcare, reducing the burden of transportation costs on the family.

When Michael first came to CURE Kenya in 2021, his condition was unlike anything many people—and even doctors—had seen before. His dad, Francis, had mixed feelings about the challenges his son faced. “I didn’t understand what was happening to my son. His twin brother was okay and healthy, but Michael was the complete opposite. I often wondered what caused it, but we couldn’t find any answer,” Francis said. By the grace of God, Michael finally had surgery to correct his inverted knees at CURE Kenya!

Dr. Theuri, CURE Kenya’s Medical Director, performed Michael’s surgery that corrected his inverted knee condition.

Transformation At Last

After five years of care, when the doctor confirmed that Michael’s treatment had been achieved, Michael began to smile and giggle in anticipation. “You are fully healed, Michael. You are free to explore your future!” Dr. Theuri told him. Hearing these words, Michael stood, looked around, and offered his hand to Dr. Theuri. “Thank you so much for giving me my life back and being so patient with us for all those years. Finally, I am disability-free!” he said joyfully, a big smile spreading across his face.

After five years, Michael returned his walker to CURE Kenya. He will no longer need it!
