Anesthesiologist

AIC CURE Children's Hospital Kenya has an exciting opening for an Anesthesiologist!

CURE Kenya was Africa’s first pediatric orthopedic teaching hospital when it opened in Kijabe in 1998. Each year it performs over 2,500 life-changing reconstructive and orthopedic surgeries for children suffering from treatable disabilities. CURE’s medical team walks with children and their families throughout every step of their healing journey, providing the therapies they need along the way. In addition to world-class clinical service, CURE Kenya ministers to the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their communities.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Anesthesiologist is responsible for providing anesthesia for the patients requiring surgical intervention in the hospital. In this capacity, the anesthesiologist will also need to oversee the nurse anesthetists or anesthetic officers. The role of the anesthesiologist will also include oversight of the HDU/ICU and any critically ill patient on the ward. The anesthesiologist will review all codes in the hospital and oversee the debrief. Subspeciality expertise in pediatric anesthesia is preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Complete and document preoperative anesthesia evaluations of patients and order necessary lab work/consultation or any other preoperative investigations at least the day prior to surgery.
  2. Review preoperative patient charts for pertinent lab work, history and physical examination, vital signs chart, fluid status and medication sheet.
  3. Choose the safest and most appropriate anaesthetic for the patient: general, regional, MAC, local or combination and utilize the correct monitors for that anaesthetic for the duration of the surgery.  Manage the patient airway adequately utilizing the mask, bag-valve mask, intubation, LMA, and other emergency airway procedures. 
  4. Accurately manage fluid resuscitation in the patient and measure blood loss regularly. 
  5. Oversee the safe functioning of the anesthesia machine, oxygen supply, suction, and all equipment necessary to provide anesthesia in close consultation with the biomedical team.  
  6. Perform various regional anesthesia techniques as required.  
  7. Assess and implement pain management in the post operative recovery period.
  8. Identify and treat intra operative & post operative anesthesia complications as soon as they occur..
  9. Accurately and thoroughly chart patient physiological data, medications & fluids administered contemporaneously pre, intra, and post operatively.
  10. Set up all necessary monitors and drugs, and check the anesthesia machine and oxygen supply prior to each anesthetic.  
  11. Read and comply with all network anaesthesia guidelines and SOPs.
  12. Seek opportunities to teach staff both clinically and didactically with regards to advanced life support, anesthesia, & pain management.
  13. Protect the patient from harm utilizing proper positioning techniques and act as an advocate for the patient’s welfare.
  14. Maintain competency of anesthesia practice in accordance with professional standards established by the profession.
  15. Participate in resuscitation of patients when required.
  16. Oversee the maintenance of an accurate narcotic count and supply in the operating room and post-anesthesia care unit.
  17. Oversee work of the Anesthesia Technicians/nurses/officers or other assigned employees.  
  18. Ensure adequate restocking of anesthesia supplies by supervising the Anesthesia Technicians or other assigned employees.
  19. Report to the Medical Director at any time when it appears to be unsafe to use the operating rooms (e.g. lack of oxygen).
  20. Act as an anesthesia consultant to anesthesia providers and medical/surgical staff.
  21. Complete monthly CQI electronic report per the direction of the Nursing/Anesthesia Clinical Director.

Director of Clinical Support Services

POSITION OVERVIEW:

 

The Director of Clinical Support Services is a key leadership role that supports the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in overseeing and strengthening clinical support services across CURE’s hospital network. As a licensed physician based in Africa, this individual will focus on standardization, optimization, and quality assurance of Laboratory, Sterile Processing, Biomedical Equipment, Pharmacy, and Procurement services. The role ensures these services align with clinical best practices, patient safety standards, and operational efficiency to support high-quality surgical and medical care. This role serves as the primary liaison between the CMO and hospital-based Managers of Clinical Support Services, ensuring that clinical support services effectively enhance surgical operations, optimize patient flow, and uphold infection control measures. Additionally, the Director will provide technical expertise, training, and strategic guidance to hospital leadership in managing their clinical support departments.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Supporting the Chief Medical Officer in Clinical Operations
    1. Work closely with the CMO to develop and implement strategic plans for clinical support services across the hospital network.
    2. Provide expert recommendations to the CMO on best practices for laboratory services, sterilization, biomedical equipment maintenance, and pharmaceutical management.
    3. Ensure that hospital support services align with CURE’s overall clinical strategy, contributing to improved patient care and surgical efficiency.
    4. Assist in reviewing policies, compliance measures, and accreditation requirements for clinical support services.
  2. Standardizing Clinical Support Services Across Hospitals
    1. Develop and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Labs, Sterile Processing, Biomedical Equipment, Pharmacy, and Procurement to ensure consistency across all CURE hospitals.
    2. Oversee the integration of clinical support services into hospital workflows, ensuring smooth collaboration with surgical and medical teams.
    3. Conduct hospital visits and virtual assessments to evaluate efficiency, patient safety, and compliance with CURE Standards.
    4. Identify and implement technology-driven improvements to enhance support services.
  3. Staff Training & Clinical Development
    1. Design and implement a training program to ensure clinical support staff are proficient in best practices, safety protocols, and compliance requirements.
    2. Serve as a mentor and clinical advisor to hospital-based Managers of Clinical Support Services, ensuring they understand their role in improving patient outcomes.
    3. Organize training sessions, workshops, and peer learning opportunities to enhance knowledge-sharing across the network.
    4. Work with hospital leadership to ensure proper recruitment and development of clinical support staff.

SERVICE-SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Laboratory Services
    1. Ensure that diagnostic labs provide timely, accurate, and high-quality test results to support clinical decision-making.
    2. Standardize testing protocols, equipment usage, and reporting procedures across hospitals.
    3. Work with laboratory teams to maintain compliance with international quality control standards.
  2. Sterile Processing & Infection Control
    1. Oversee sterilization protocols to prevent infection risks in surgical procedures.
    2. Ensure hospital teams follow proper instrument decontamination, sterilization, and storage procedures.
    3. Support hospital infection control committees in maintaining a safe patient care environment.
  3. Biomedical Equipment & Maintenance
    1. Ensure all medical devices and surgical equipment are well-maintained, properly calibrated, and compliant with safety standards.
    2. Work with network lead and hospital-based biomedical teams to implement preventive maintenance programs and repairs.
    3. Oversee commissioning and installation of new equipment.
  4. Pharmacy Services
    1. Implement safe medication management protocols, ensuring proper storage, dispensing, and regulatory compliance.
    2. Oversee training for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on best practices in drug safety and supply management.
    3. Monitor medication inventory levels and procurement to prevent shortages and inefficiencies.
  5. Medical Supplies & Equipment Procurement
    1. Develop and oversee standardized procurement processes to ensure consistent availability of high-quality medical supplies and equipment.
    2. Work with hospital teams, supply chain teams, and finance departments to optimize purchasing decisions.

QUALITY ASSURANCE & COMPLIANCE

  1. Ensure all hospital support services comply with local, national, and international healthcare regulations.
  2. Develop and oversee quality assurance programs to maintain high standards of patient safety.
  3. Conduct hospital audits and operational assessments, working with the CMO to implement corrective actions.
  4. Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure and improve clinical support service effectiveness.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS & CRISIS MANAGEMENT

  1. Assist the CMO and hospital leadership in developing emergency response plans for hospital support services. 
  2. Ensure staff readiness to handle crises such as equipment failures, supply shortages, or infectious disease outbreaks.
  3. Work with hospital emergency response teams to ensure rapid, coordinated action during crises.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Licensed Medical Doctor (MD, MBChB, or equivalent) required.
  2. Postgraduate degree (MPH, MHA, or similar) in healthcare leadership, hospital administration, or public health is preferred.
  3. Minimum of 7-10 years of clinical experience, with at least 3-5 years in a hospital leadership or administrative role.
  4. Proven experience in managing ancillary hospital services and ensuring clinical compliance.
  5. Strong collaborative leadership skills, working closely with CMOs, hospital directors, and clinical teams.
  6. Ability to travel frequently across Africa to support CURE hospitals.
  7. Proficiency in Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides) and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Pharmaceutical Technologist - Locum Basis
  1. Dispense drugs to in-patients upon discharge and out-patients as per need. Ensure educating    patients with instructions for proper use/cautioning on side effects is done always.
  2. Scrutinize patient’s treatment sheets and prescriptions for suitability of prescribed drugs in relation to dosing accuracy, drug interaction and route of administration.
  3.  Replenish stocks of in-patient medications as per treatment sheets.
  4. Provide drug information to patients, clinicians, nurses and other medical staff.
  5. Maintain an accurate record of all issued medicines in the bin cards, issue book and Odoo system.
  6. Participate in regular monitoring of medication management in the clinical areas.
  7.  Ensure cleanliness of the pharmacy.
  8. In-charge of all quality activities in relation to this position as per the Hospital Standards.
  9. Maintain the pharmacy store
  10. Making medication orders for the pharmacy
  11. Supply medication orders to other departments such as OR and wards.
  12. Maintain the pharmacy cold chain.
  13. Maintain all the pharmacy records and any other pharmacy administrative task as assigned.
  14.  Prepare and send all required periodic reports.
  15. Keep up to date with the current pharmacy practice and drugs.
  16. Collaborates effectively with other members of staff in order to provide quality service to our patients and most importantly supporting the vision, mission and values of CURE.
  17. Maintain and Manage OSHA Standards in Cleanliness, through Implementation of the OSHA Policy and, ensure that they wear the provided PPEs at all times.
  18. In-charge of all quality activities in relation to this position as per the Hospital Standards (SAFECARE).
